CAS Announces Spring Play
This spring, our juniors and seniors will perform a brand-new adaptation of Oscar Wilde's beloved classic, The Importance of Being Earnest. Set in Victorian New England, our version of this quintessential comedy of manners retains all the mansions, tea parties, witty dialogue, hilarious characters, and cutting social commentary of the original. Our version also features musical numbers, using music by the great light opera composer Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert & Sullivan) with original, re-worked lyrics, plus several new characters.
As part of the core curriculum at Chesterton, all juniors and seniors are given a significant speaking role in the play. The arts are included in the core curriculum for many reasons, including humanity's innate inclination to experience and participate in beauty. Drama is also uniquely efficient at imparting practical life skills such as memorization, teamwork, self-awareness, and awareness of how our actions are perceived by others.
In fact, drama is a microcosm of the Christian life. In it a story, wrought by a playwright, unfolds with each person given their necessary and irreplaceable role. Each person, in a certain way, is directed and guided, yet each is completely free and able to add their own unique flare and personality. Each person is a piece — a very important piece — that only they can play in the drama being presented. By performing in this play, students will have a fuller understanding not only of certain literary characters but also a deeper understanding of who they are and what part the Divine Author may be asking them to play in the drama of life.
